The History:

Arnd Baggen

Arnd Baggen is the Managing Director and main driving force behind German Events Market Specialists Ltd (GEMS). Arnd was born during 1956 in Berlin West Germany and made his name as a show-jumper throughout the 1970’s and 80’s. Even though he achieved world recognition for his equine excellence, his desire to run his own Bavarian market was never far from his mind. In the twilight years of his show-jumping career, Arnd made the decision to dedicate himself to his first true love, The Traditional Bavarian Market.

In 1990 Arnd started his current business with the intention of massively expanding the appeal of the Bavarian Market industry whilst remaining true to the traditions which had seen the markets evolve over hundreds of years. From the origins of supplying mainly local food produce, he vastly expanded the repertoire of goods available on all his stalls.

Arnd revolutionised the way that Bavarian Markets operated to such an extent, that in 1998 he was made President of the largest Market Traders organisation in Germany. In 1999 he also became a leading member of UECA the European Market Traders Organisation in Brussels and between 2000 and 2002 his biggest accolade to date was becoming a member of the European Union Council for Trade and Commerce.

By now Arnd was running Bavarian Market stalls all over the European continent. In 2000 as a member of the European Union Council for Trade and Commerce, Arnd came to Manchester to trade at the very first continental style outdoor Christmas Market of its type to be found in the UK. It was here that he met his business partner and now Chief Executive of GEMS, Tim Ross.
